Unfortunately, the title of structural engineer is not protected and therefore any one can say they are a structural engineer – even if they have no relevant qualifications or experience.

How do I ensure a structural engineer is competent and has the relevant qualifications?

One way is to check that a structural engineer has a professional grade membership with the institution of structural engineers. By logging on to the institutions web site and checking whether they have membership and what grade of membership.

Can anybody use the institution logo?

No, this has to be applied for by a member and use approved - although unauthorised use dose occur.

Do we have professional indemnity?

Yes, we do and this is a requirement of the institution of structural engineers.

If I carry out a structural alteration, will I need building control approval?

Yes, building control approval will be required and this can be obtained via the local authority or an approved building inspector for residential work.

If work has be carried out and building control approval was not granted, what should I do?

You can apply to the local authority to regularise the work (retrospective approval). Providing the work meets with the Building Regulations and / or British Standards approval will be granted.

What is Party Wall Act 1966?

This act provides owners of land or buildings with certain new rights and obligations to other owners in relation to party walls and other structures in the proximity of boundaries.  At the same time, it provides a framework for a disciplined approach to exercise these rights.  It also lays down procedures for the resolution of disputes. It can accessed via www.legislation.gov.uk

What is the  purpose of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations?

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations  aim to improve health and safety in the construction industry by establishing clear responsibilities for all parties involved in construction projects.  Compliance with the Regulations is a legal requirement in the UK.  These regulations may apply to your project and could require the appointment of duty holders such as principal designer or contractor.
